Syro Malabar Church is not an Offshoot of Chaldean Church

Cardinal Parecattil wrote to Archbishop Miroslaw Marusyn, Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches: I wish to make it clear that our Church, tracing its origin from the apostolate of St. Thomas is not an offshoot of the Chaldean Church, though our liturgy happened to be an offspring of the liturgical colonialism spearheaded by the immigrants of the 4th century under Thomas of Cana.
Commenting on this Statement Bishop Gratian Mundadan Wrote: The Cardinal used to argue that the Church in Kerala had no need to surrender its identity to any foreign Church. He refuted the arguements based on a "host of conjectins" and "other obnoxious claims" on the origin of the Rite of St. Thomas Christians and concluded that they are only manifestations of a vain endeavour to establish that the Chaldean traditions should be restored in toto and no adaptations be tolerated. He unhesitatingly asserted that the Syro Malabar Chruch has its own identity independent of that of the Chaldean Church.

  1. One would definitely see elements of Chaldean and latin churches in the liturgy of syro malabar church, since SMC (Syro malabar church) was influenced by these two churches.

    1. As an individual I do not agree with these views. Such views were rejected by Rome during the time of Cardianl Parekkattil itself. Now why some priests are trying to revive the argument... what is the agenda behind it? It is not the best thing cardianl Parekkattil did for the church... why they are not remembering him of some accepted vierws..?I am not comparing cardinal with Fr. Placid Podippara. But trying to compare cardinals's proposal for Bharatheeyam liturgy with Fr. Placids stand which says SM Church is Catholic in faith, chaldean in liturgy and hindu or bharath in culture. Cardianl argued that SM should become Bharatheeyam in liturgy too and that stand was rejected by Rome. Based on the directives from Rome the experimental text of Holy Mass was prepared and approved and then in the later stage the current text for Holy mass was approved. I am not degrading Cardianl, but challenging the intention of the priests who are trying to project a rejected thesis than to follow the directives of the Holy catholic Church. 2.

  2. The historical Parecattil and historical Podipara are the truth telling stories. The first stood for truth and second succeeded in manipulating truth. Without studying the truth of the Syro Malabar Liturgical reformation you may not understand the basis of the Liturgical issue in the Syro-Malabar church.
